| James "Fitzy" Fitzgibbons died suddenly on Sunday, March 21, 2004 while working at his shop, Goosebrook Garage in Norton, Mass. Fitzy built and owned stock cars that ran in the Hobby Division at Norwood Arena Speedway in the 1960's. Gene Berthelette (99) and Jeff Reed (92) won feature events driving for Fitzy. Most recently, Fitzy restored an early 1960's coupe that Bill Schulz ran at Norwood Arena and painted it to match the number and colors of Schulz's car for the 2003 Norwood Reunion. Friday late afternoons was a time for "drinking beer and telling lies" at Goosebrook as young and old drivers, fans, and mechanics congregated next to the old stock car to talk. Fitzy was a good friend, strong supporter of this web site and the preservation of the history of Norwood Arena Speedway. |
